Step by Step Tutorial for the Three Needle Bind Off in Knitting
The three-needle bind-off is a technique used to join two sets of live stitches, creating a sturdy, seam-like finish. It’s ideal for shoulder seams or any place you need a durable and neat join. Here are the steps to create a perfect three needle bind off.
Materials Needed:
Two knitting needles holding live stitches (equal number of stitches on each needle).
A third needle of the same or slightly larger size.
Yarn (attached to your work, or a separate strand for contrast if desired).
Step 1: Arrange Your Needles
Hold the two needles with live stitches parallel to each other, with the right sides of the fabric facing each other.
The wrong sides should be on the outside.
Ensure both sets of stitches are evenly distributed and aligned.
Step 2: Insert the Third Needle
With the third needle in your dominant hand, insert it knitwise through the first stitch on the front needle and the first stitch on the back needle simultaneously.
Wrap your working yarn around the third needle as if to knit.
Step 3: Knit Two Together
Pull the yarn through both stitches (from front and back needles), creating a single stitch on the third needle.
Slide the original stitches off both front and back needles.
Step 4: Repeat Across the Row
Insert the third needle into the next stitches on the front and back needles, knit them together, and slide the stitches off.
You will now have two stitches on your third needle.
Step 5: Bind Off
Pass the first stitch on the third needle over the second stitch, just like a standard bind-off.
Continue knitting together the next stitch from the front and back needles, then bind off as you go.
Step 6: Finish the Edge
When you reach the last stitch, cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail.
Pull the tail through the last stitch to secure.
Step 7: Weave in Ends
Use a tapestry needle to weave in the yarn tail securely on the wrong side of the fabric.
Tips for Success:
If you're working with different yarn weights or want the seam to lie flat, use a slightly larger third needle to ensure the bind-off isn’t too tight.
Practice tension consistency to avoid a ridge on one side of the seam.
For added flair, use a contrasting yarn for a decorative seam.
Now you've completed a three-needle bind-off!
Happy Knitting!
